So, I’ve Been Ending My Progress Notes With ‘08 For A Couple Of Weeks Now…

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

With a new year, invariably, comes chatter of resolutions. (Top Ten lists as well, but I digress.) Many people make them. Very few stick with them. Some pay the concept no mind. As Mur astutely points out, it negates the idea of a “resolution” (namely, the whole “resolve” part) to stop talking about it after a few months, then after a few more, looking forward to making resolutions again for the following year.

My own history with resolutions hasn’t been all that successful. The only one that I can recall keeping was that of losing weight a couple of years back, and that was motivated not by an arbitrary numerical date change, but by a significant personal event. That said, the idea of making resolutions to time with a “new year” isn’t necessarily flawed - a flip of the calendar is as good as any symbolic milestone to use as a starting point for changing something about one’s self for the positive. Without some other independent factor, though, the follow-through usually fails.

Instead of resolutions, then, several of my friends have been establishing hopes or goals to look forward to in 2008. I’ve pondered doing something like this, but I’m finding the potential pool of candidate goals is quite large, and all seem to be equally screaming for my attention. If there’s one thing I truly want to change, it’s less specific things (i.e. lose 20 pounds by June), and more a global approach to my daily living and workflow that will allow me to do more of what I want, and make what I do better. As such, I’ve decided to experiment with the following - I’ve selected a theme for the year:

Balance.

Despite all that I’ve accomplished over the last year - some of the more meaningful items included moving out of fellowship into full-fledged attending physicianhood, passing my Infectious Diseases boards (I never mentioned that, did I? Well, I did now!), and actively participating in some podcasting voice work - there’s a lot more that I didn’t get to. Be it finishing research projects from my fellowship, gaming more, combating the entropic beast that has taken over the house, keeping in closer touch with meaningful people both near and remotely (and yes, that includes blogging), or realizing a seekrit projekt or five, balance is the key thing needed to shoehorn these into an already overfull schedule. Noone will ever accuse me of having a lot of so-called “free time,” but it is true that what I do have I often don’t put to the best use possible.

So here’s the experiment: I’m committing to regularly discussing “balance” in this space, at least once a month. A Balance Report, if you will. While I’m not aiming to discuss specific goals, I have a few ideas on how I can balance my existence better in the coming months that I’ll ruminate on, and maybe even enact. At the very least, it will keep my Theme for 2008 in the forefront of my mind.

Oh, I will be putting up a couple of “2007 retrospective posts” in the coming days. Not out of any sense of nostalgia, mind you, but more because I promised to blog about several date-specific topics (conventions and movies, for instance), and didn’t. That will be remedied.

Evening Rounds

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I took the infectious diseases board certification exam this past Tuesday, and am quite happy it’s done with. Unfortunately, I came down with an upper respiratory infection the day before - some would say that I was being a bit too “hands-on” in my studying - as well as a small migrane during the test itself, so hopefully my performance wasn’t too negatively impacted. I thought that overall, the questions were challenging, but not impossible. That said, I am fond of how one of my colleagues summed up his opinion of it:

“Are you kidding? Where the fuck did that exam come from?”

This weekend will be one of recuperation, but there’s quite a bit looming in the near future. Interviewing season for new residents is now in full swing, in which I’m playing a considerable role. My evidence-based medicine course is starting up again next week, which I still have quite a bit to prepare for. I also have some audio work to do, but there will be more on that as things progress.

Finally, Ronnie has moved his main blog to a new address, and been putting up some interesting posts. Check out the Pint ‘N Tome, and give him some comment love!

Afternoon Rounds

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

The PNME has been going on this weekend. A segment of the Tribe has been attending, and Laura had the chance to socialize there as well during her work trip - it sounds like everyone has had an excellent time. While clearly not a fan convention, the fact that many of my friends and acquaintances are there has made me a bit wistful for previous gatherings, like Dragon*Con, and reminded me that I haven’t blogged about them yet… That sounds like a good thing to remedy today.

The usual mantra of “things are well, but busy” still applies. The next big thing looming in my sights is the Infectious Diseases board exam, coming up on October 30. As always, there is much more, but that will come shortly.

A couple links of note:

I had a more entertaining time at the Maryland Renaissance Festival than I expected, but more on that in a bit.

Afternoon Rounds for 8/25/2007

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Laura is back on US soil! Granted, in San Francisco, but it makes me happy nonetheless. She’ll be visiting with some of her NASA peeps at Ames over the next few days, before heading back here, and us proceeding on to Dragon*Con.

I’m sure she’ll have some experiences and images to share, now that she’s back from behind the Great Firewall and done with intensive coursework, so keep an eye on her feeds over the coming days and weeks.

We leave for Dragon*Con in a few short days, and I am quite stoked. It will be wonderful to reconnect with tribemates, both old and new, as well as to decompress a bit from the New Job, and properly (and belatedly) celebrate that employment transition.

Speaking of the New Job, it continues to be excellent. That said, between making daily on-the-fly changes to the evidence-based medicine course, as well as covering for other people to ensure adequate coverage for Dragon*Con, I haven’t made time to pass on some fun and interesting stuff in this forum.

This will be remedied shortly…

Rounds for 5/24/2007 - Pre-Balticon edition

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I’m leaving for Balticon today, with a plethora of gameage and libations in tow. Laura will be joining me this evening, upon return from her Colorado trip, and some degree of gibbering madness will ensue.

If you’re not going, be sure to peruse the website to check out some of what’s going on. Things I’m looking forward to? The biggest, for me at any rate, is going to be hanging out with people both podcastery and authory. Michael and Evo are special guests this year, and there’s a whole podcasting track lined up. Notable things include on-site recordings of Wingin’ It and Geek Fu Action Grip, among many others. I have the pleasure of contributing an “evil” voice to the Mr. Adventure episode being recorded there, as well!

Other notables include author guests of honor Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, as well as events surrounding our favorite sculpturist Lisa Snellings-Clark, and her PoppetPlanet project. The science track is pretty stacked as well, which is great to see.

It will also be great to see Ronnie and his wife Lora again, as they are coming out for the convention as part of a vacation trip. Hopefully we’ll get some of his local gaming friends to make the trip up as well. Not that there will be any massive time for gaming available, but one can always hope… I think we’ll try to get a group together to see the glorious mess that will be Pirates 3 on Monday evening, as well.

If you can make it out, do so! If not, we’ll be in touch on the other side…

Babka Liz and Phat Ink

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Laura’s mother got a tattoo. The Cross is obvious, and one has to assume the triangle brings the Trinity into play.

Or, perhaps, the Triforce? Probably not…

In any case, it looks good! While you’re at it, go visit her site and give her some Comment Love.

The Hermitage

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

The are many denizens of teh Internets who are aspiring writers, and blog of their struggles and experiences, but few are as talented and glorious as my good friend Ronnie. Writer. Physicist. Ex-NASA engineer. Philosopher. And most recently, Arkansasian neo-hermit.

Visit his site and follow his progress as he hones his craft… and give him some Comment Love.

Laura’s Life Adventures

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

As I’ve muttered about before in this space, Laura and I both recently resolved to actively maintain our websites, because:

1. we’re stupidly busy with work, and take on more projects than we should

2. we’re 20th level procrastinators, who’ve elevated this most glorious of arts to a new level

3. as a result of 1 and 2, don’t take nearly the time we should to stay in contact with everyone we like, love, and/or find amusing

As such, posting regularly on teh Internets is an excellent way for all of us to keep in touch, entertained, and informed. Clearly, you know where my website is.

Now, go to Laura’s. And give her some Comment Love.
